Visit Montauk, NY for some crisp surf
in the middle of Spring. The Gurney's Inn is located
104 miles East of JFK airport. Mostly traveling the Sunrise
highway, depending on traffic around West Hampton, drive time is anywhere
from 1.5 to 4 hours. We arrived on a Thursday morning with a fading
Nor' Easter drifting out to sea. The surf was extremely clean & on the
small side, waist high for short surfers. The set ups out at the end
of the road by Montauk Lighthouse look sick, this place must fire when the
right swell is in the water. We dreamed of surfing Turtles but came to
find little knee slappers out there. We turned back and surfed Ditch,
the most consistent spot to catch some waves, but ruled by longboarders.
After the morning ice-cream headaches we used the Roman bath back at the
Gurneys, then each night we found ourselves ponied up next to the local
fisherman at the bar, drinking the night's away. Good times! |
